At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cook has just arrived in New Orleans and is excited to be involved in the war. Probably doesn't realize the gravity of the nation's situation when he writes, "I think it probable that I shall be back by the 10th of February but am not sure of it." Tells Eliza not to worry herself about his return.
