At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Rhett, a United States Representative from South Carolina, writes to Upshur, Secretary of the Navy. Recommends the Naval appointment of a young man from Beaufort. Writes, "I am but slightly acquainted, but from the character of the Father, I have no doubt he will do credit to the Navy..." Contains several dockets.
