At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

William Cocks, Nathaniel Harrison, Mann Page, and Robert Porteus are appointed to administer the oaths required by Parliament in "An Act for the Security of Her Majesty's Person Government and of the Succession to the Crown of Great Britain in the Protestant Line." At the time he was Lieutenant Governor, and His Majesty's Commander-in-Chief, in the Colony of Virginia. One black and white bust engraving of Spotswood included.
