At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Morton, a United States Senator from Indiana, writes to President Grant. Relates that Bryson Lilley, Esq., is an applicant for the position of Commissioner or Secretary to the Board of Commissioners under the new city government. Recommends Lilley, a "thorough Republican," noting that he is well qualified for the position.
