At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brigadier General Weitzel writes: "I do not formally know Capt. Vandenbergh. But I am told by reliable officers that he is a very good man, and would make a first rate commanding officer for this regiment. I therefore hope he will be appointed, and ordered to rejoin his regiment."
