At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Rawlins, Assistant Adjutant General under Ulysses S. Grant, writes to Hamilton, commander of the Left Wing of the Army of Tennessee. Transmits copied dispatch from General James Birdseye McPherson (not included), and instructs Hamilton: "hold one of the remaining Divisions of your Command in readiness to move at a moments notice." Docketed in pencil, apparently at a later date.
