General Hill writes to Colonel Chilton, Assistant Adjutant General serving under Robert E. Lee, to discuss an endorsement on an enclosed application [not present]. Hill desires a detail for the applicant as a clerk in the adjutant general's office of Hill's division; says he cannot assign his nephew to the post, as they are not in the same division. On verso, is an autograph endorsement signed by Chilton, referring this request to General Henry Alexander Wise. There is also an autograph endorsement signed by Wise in pencil, 9 June 1862, remarking that Hill's request should be complied with "if it will not impair the efficiency of the company." Docket notes that Hill's nephew is Sergeant Hill of the 4th Virginia Volunteers. Says"He is in a company of stationary artillery, lately turned into Infantry, with only some 30 members, lying in camp perfectly useless, and likely to be so, and being a nephew of mine I would like to have him, & make him useful..." One bust engraving of Hill included as collateral.
