At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Winder, commander of the Department of Henrico, Richmond, Virginia, writes to Captain Pearce (possibly James H. Pearce). Discusses a pass "signed by McCuffins chief of Police in the possession of a man named McMullin." Reports that McCuffin's name was misspelled, and that after investigation, "the pass turned to be a yank forgery." One bust engraving of Winder included as collateral.
