At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by John Cotton as deputy secretary of the province. Thomas Hutchinson's signature is noted as being a copy. Partially printed document with additional information written in by hand. Appoints Henry Knox to be Lieutenant of the Grenadier Company in Boston, Massachusetts. Verso includes an attestation that Knox took the required oaths. A portion of the document has been clipped causing text loss.
