At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Seems to describe a naval weapon. Accompanies GLC02437.00213, a letter from Josiah Quincy in which Quincy discusses benefits of establishing an American naval force. Notes indicate that three "tier" of the structure depicted by the diagram "would provided the Timber was large, demolish the biggest Ship in the Navy." Includes further notes on construction of the weapon. Verso contains another diagram of a part of the weapon or a different weapon. Date added later in pencil
