Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Complains about Knox not writing her. Mentions how isolated they are from everyone. Speaks of mutual acquaintances of theirs. Also discusses the recent deaths and sicknesses in her family. Letter is addressed to "Miss Knox," likely referring to Lucy Flucker Knox, daughter of Henry and Lucy Knox. Written from North Santee, present day Santee, South Carolina.
