At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pettition requesting that the Masschusetts government protect his lands against hostile squatters who live nearby, and who have repeatly attacked his surveyors and threatened violence to his lands. States that the government has promised protection, and has previously aided him, but that his lands remain threatened. Details the history of the attacks on his lands, and the opposition of these squatters and neighbors. Written some time shortly after August 1801.
