At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sends his sympathy for the sad event afflicting the Knox family (the death of Henry Knox). Adds that it will unfortunately not be in his power to visit Thomaston in the next few weeks. Also discusses the land survey commissioned for land purchased by Mr. [Isaac] Thorndike, Mr. Sears, and Mr. Prescot.
