At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unsigned, but handwriting suggests the author is Henry Knox. Writes that he received Thorndike's last letter, and though he wished Thorndike could have visited, he was happy Thorndike and his family have arrived at home safely. Discusses his attempts to collect money to repay Thorndike's note, and the arrangements he is making for repayment.
