At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells about his terrible misfortunes, including a decadent, alcoholic son, a loss of property and money during the war, and the death of his wife as a consequence. Explains that his son, Colborn, was taken ill aboard an American naval vessel and would like to know whether this entitles his son to hospital care.
