At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter is not signed but appears to be in Knox's handwriting. Discusses his settlers land bonds. Says he has agreed with settlers on the plantations in Maine. Also instructs Houston to regulate the inhabitants on Knox's plantations in Maine. Notes he would like Houston to visit the plantation at least once a month. Says his biggest concern is to insure the settlers do not take up any other lots than their original lots. Provides further instructions on what is required of Houston and details regarding the land bonds.
