At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the idea of building a road. Says he would like to see a turnpike road built from [Harriman's] Ferry to Augusta bridge in Maine. States he is not sure how to begin the business but believes subscriptions in the amount of $5000 may be found east of the Penobscot River. Discusses further aspects of the plan including how and what land to obtain, where to build the road, and the long term value of the project.
