Informs Knox that the event he feared most has happened, he was "obliged to declare myself insolvent." He is now "obliged to keep myself to my room to avoid being arrested - " States he has Knox's bond and will hold it "sacredly in my possession to be delivered up to you." Details his credit troubles and discusses the difficulty in repaying debts and creditors. Ends by stating his only consolation is to know he still has friends, "who will not despise me for unmerited misfortunes, and that I am able to class so good a character as you among that number." In a postscript writes that his creditors are gathering next Tuesday and "If I am not obliged to expose my books your bond will be kept entirely out of view."
