At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Expresses his sorrow about Knox resigning as Secretary of War. Discusses his service since being employed by Knox and requests a raise. Reminds Knox he had promised to do something better for him. Says he cannot support his family on a $700 yearly salary. Notes if he is not paid an additional sum he will be forced to enter the "theatre of the World."
