At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A list of the sums of money disbursed throughout the year of 1794. The expenses include pay subsistence and Forage of the Legion, clothing, bounty, hospital department, repairs , defence protection, Indian department, quartermaster's department, contingencies of War Department, invalid pensions, naval armament, equipment of galleys, fortification of harbors, Corps of Artillerists and Engineers, defense of Southwest territory, detachment of militia, building and repairing arsenals, national armouries, and arms ammunition. Total sum for the year is $2,197,805.65.
