Written by Captain Randall to Secretary of War Knox. Encloses six Philadelphia Bank post notes (not included) and discusses William Duer's notes. Writes that $4,902.64 "is the whole amount remitted you in consequence of the two notes of Wm. Duer, discounted the balance shall be sent by post on Friday if I can obtain notes for it." Says he has attended to the issue mentioned in Knox's letter of 12 June. Says that Medad Mitchell was sick, but has recovered his health. He is still in the pay of William Duer at one dollar a day plus expenses for surveying lands "in the Western Country." Says he is sober and has ability, but is too caught up in gaming "and idles away his time." Says he would like a copy of Samuel Shaw's letter as he did not make one.
