At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unsigned, but handwriting suggests the author is Henry Knox. Received his recent letter via Mr. [Nathaniel] Gorham. Reports that while he "feel[s] for the situation of the respectable Mr. Henley," he is unable to assist him apart from what he outlined in his recent letter to Henley (see GLC02437.04155). Discusses mortgage paperwork for Mr. [Thomas] Flucker's lands.
