At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Knox that the bearer of the letter, William Morris, was appointed Captain to command the forces "destined for the western frontiers." Morris is very disappointed by this appointment. Sullivan asks Knox if there is anything that can be done for Morris and that he will "hazard my own reputation upon his fidelity courage and good conduct..."
