At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in the third person and signed in text: "Genl Knox presents his compliments to the honorable Mr Ramsay, and submits to his inspection a plan for the general arrangement of the militia." Asks Mr. Ramsay for any suggestions to the plan to help it achieve "greater public utility." Docket refers to Mr. Ramsay as "Chairman of Congress."
