At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Knox for assistance in obtaining the depreciation of pay for his service during the Revolutionary War. Expresses his hope to settle his accounts with the New York Legislature. Writes that although he fares well as a lawyer in New York, he does not expect "to be amongst the foremost in the Profession" because his studies were neglected during the time he served in the military.
