At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked as a duplicate. Major Haskell and Captain J. Bliss write to Brooks, assistant clothier general. They give Brooks a report on their inspection of 499 hats in the clothing store: "... in our judgment the whole unfit to be issued to the Troops-- some of them are too small in the crown, others are too narrow brim'd, and the remainder are so illy made as to render them almost unfit for any service."
