At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes he is leaving for England "where it is most probable I shall spend the remainder of my days." Thanks Knox for his friendship and kindness and asks Knox to look out for his daughter, Mrs. Jauncy and his friend, Mr. William Seton, as they are staying in New York.
