At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses instructions for the making of a new sulky, which is a light one-horse carriage, usually for one person. Writes that "[i]f you think that the irons will be sufficiently strong to support a chair for two persons you will make it of that size - If you think not make it for one person."
