At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Provision return for Captain Patten's company of artificers, which belonged to the ordinance department, from 21 April to 24 April. 69 soldiers were each given 1 1/2 rations a day for four days for a total of 432 rations issued. Signed twice by Patten on recto and verso. Countersigned by John Lillie, aide-de-camp. Docket signed by Dudley Mercer as quartermaster sergeant, stating that contractors delivered the rations.
