At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brigadier General Knox writes to his brother: "We have no news, but are alarm'd at the rapid depreciation of the paper currency... the State of Pennsylvania, has pass'd an act to strike old and new out of circulation after the first of next month, and in lieu thereof to emit 500,000 currency of that state upon some certain funds." Instructs William, who handled many of his business affairs: "This state of the money will point out to you most forcibly the necessity of obtaining the sums due to me..."
