At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt noting that Otis & Andrews [& Henley] "supplied sundry articles of clothing- inclusive of an inconsiderable quantity of arms, lead & c and sundries in the Quartermaster Generals Department- from 16 October 1778 to the 13 January 1779." Includes balance of account with the note, "The above charges are in paper money, and probably have been settled by the Scale of depr," likely referring to the scale of depreciation.
