At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt to Henry Emmanuel Lotterloh, signed by him. "Received of Samuel Shaw... a horse suitable for an Express, in lieu of which I have given him permission to take one for a Batt Horse from Benja Hadden, which... Hadden says was valued last June at fifty pounds." Written at Camp Great Valley.
