At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

I met two men in rebel uniform who gave themselves up as deserters...states that the force under McCausland [Confederate Brigadier General John McCausland] who attacked this place consists of...in all 1000 Infantry with one hundred cavalry with Bryants battery of 5-6 pounders and one 12 pounder. The programme for McCausland to come via Fayette. Echols by the Lewisburg Pike and Imboden via Summerville...The rebel loss is one Killed and 3 wounded..."
