At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Handwritten telegram to Brigadier General Scammon from David, the Assistant Superintendent of Military Telegraphs. Advises that the telegraph line to Fayette, West Virginia is completed. States that Major General Jacob Dolson Cox wants the line extended to Raleigh, West Virginia and asks when Scammon will be advancing there so he can start planning the extension. Written on stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph.
