At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly a copy in General Scammon's hand of a decoded cypher telegram to Scammon from Colonel Duval. Explains the report of a scout named Jim Webb but states he does not have confidence in it. Informs that five of Colonel Tomlinson's men were captured. Gives Confederate troop locations from Colonel Carr Bailey White. Date from docket.
