Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Major and Provost Marshall Darr writes to Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio to say that Major McPhail needs to know who his servants are. With autograph endorsement signed of Scammon giving the names of his two colored servants, William Woodyear, and William Clark. Only dated the 30th, year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
