At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Scammon, as Colonel of the 23rd Ohio writes to the Assistant Quarter Master at Gualey Bridge, West Virginia asking how many horses and wagons he can give for artillery. States they want 36 horses for artillery and 24 animals for wagons. Mentions that General Jacob Dolson Cox said they could have rubber blankets from Gauley. Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
