At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Parker informs Cox that he has heard from reliable sources that Confederate General Albert G. Jenkins is planning another raid in a couple of weeks. Describes his source for the information. With endorsement of Major G. M. Bascom on verso dated 10 March stating the letter has been referred to Brigadier General Scammon. Scammon endorses it as received on 12 March and writes, "Why not telegraph?"
