At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Adams, Secretary of State, informs Onis, Minister Plenipotentiary from Spain, of the troubled travels of American William Davis Robinson in Mexico. States that Robinson was imprisoned after surrendering to Spanish authorities in Playa Vincente; following his surrender, the United States appealed to Spain to release him. Requests Robinson's immediate release. This document is fragile and slightly torn in the creases in page two.
