Endorsement on verso of a 2 September petition written in Pitch County. In the petition, twelve men request that Colonel George Wortham allow Elijah M. Walker, Company F., 49th North Carolina Infantry, to remain as a scout for Bertie County. Petitioners cite that during Walker's service there, "Bertie has ceased to be a rendezvous for Buffaloes and deserters as it formerly was," and that Walker suceeded in checking "a large and unlawful blockade trade in cotton." Petition signed by Captain Edward Payson George, J. S. Wiggis, Colonel J. J. Rhodes, Aaron O. Askew, A. J. Askew, Etherton Wilson, and Lieutenant J. L. Mitchell, among others. Colonel Wortham signs on verso 11 September, requesting that Walker be returned to Bertie County. 23 September, Colonel [Lee McAfee?] signs, disapproving of the request, stating "This man Walker is not always to be relied upon." Colonel P. F. Faison signs 24 September, respectfully forwarding this petition. General Johnson signs 25 September, approving the Brigade Commander's endorsement. Also endorsed by R. T. Tilghman, acting assistant adjutant general, who instructs Colonel Wortham to see that an order by General P.G.T. Beauregard's is enforced.
