At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Document reads in full: "This is to certify that A. J. Brane of Rockingham County, and State of N. C. a Private of the Army of Northern Virginia, has this day given his parole in accordance with the terms agreed upon by Lieutenant General U. S. GRANT, commanding U. S. Army, and General ROBT. E. LEE, commanding C. S. Army." The parole is signed by J. L. Dow.
