At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bingham, a United States Representative from Pennsylvania, responds to a request from Corbin (refer to GLC02382.124). Indicates that he will support a bill that would grant Brevet Major General Henry Jackson Hunt, Colonel retired, the rank of Major General on the retired list. States "I will look into the legislation proposed and as I now understand the question see no reason why it should not pass." Bingham served as Union Brevet Brigadier General and was awarded the medal of honor for the Wilderness Campaign.
