At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Plate 19." Contains 2 images. Top half titled "Stuck in the Mud," depicts a pontoon wagon with a boat stuck fast in the mud. A regiment of infantry is pulling on a rope attached to the head of the team, trying to drag them to firmer ground. Bottom image titled "A Flank March Across Country During a Thunder Storm," shows a drenched column of men marching. Actual size of the image without the margins is 28.3 x 40.7 cm.
