At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Plate 16." Depicts the army going into action through the pinewoods. In the foreground a tree has been fired to give light for the march, and in the distance dense volumes of smoke are rolling up, the underbrush having caught fire from burning cartridges. Actual size of the image without the margins is 28.3 x 40.7 cm. Outline from matting is faintly visible. Title and image information taken from the table of contents.
