Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Plate 12." Shows a party of stragglers from the column which is seen marching over the hill in the distance. These are the men who are most likely to shirk a battle and were to be found with their regiments only when rations were to be served out, at a safe distance from the enemy.
