At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Plate 3." Depicts a team of 5 horses being whipped by their riders as they drag a wagon of supplies and a piece of artillery along a muddy lane in the forest. The wagon wheels are caked with mud. The body of a dead horse lies in the lower left foreground. Actual size of the image without the margins is 27.8 x 40.2 cm. Outline from matting is faintly visible.
