At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

In their current quarters there is no water except from the well so they passed by Cambridge where the the 16th regiments was stationed. They had plenty of water. He describes an examination they had to undergo in which they they stripped naked and someone looked them over "like a jockey would a horse." Written in Camp Lincoln
