Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

McFadden was a Private in the 40th Ohio Volunteers. Collection consists of letters written to his sisters and other friends and family from Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee about being on the move and skirmishing with the enemy. Describe his talks with prisoners and also mention his talks with "darkies."
