At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: He describes marching through the mud during the Peninsula and Valley campaign in Virginia [Spring 1862]. He describes his location near the revolutionary site of Yorktown on the James River and reports that the "Rebbles are leaving and going back in to ther back intrenchments."
