At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his mother. "...had a rite smart battle here ...prisons had no arms so they sent them away out of danger..." Describes the hard time they had getting to Martinsburg. Mentions going through New London, Washington, Baltimore, Harpers Ferry and finally Martinsburg. "...and put us in prison...put us on board a transport with 700 conscrips..." Written in pencil.
